PHYSICS: AN INTERESTING SKETCH
Imagine a subject that describes every aspect of the universe. Hard to imagine? Well, that does exist in the name of Physics. The only subject that never fails to describe anything. It always takes part in every discovery and explanation taking place in the universe, directly or indirectly. Have you thought why the name Physics? Well, that’s not difficult to predict. Physics (from Ancient Greek: φυσική (ἐπιστήμη), romanized: physikḗ (epistḗmē), 'knowledge of nature', from φύσις phýsis 'nature') is the natural science that studies matter, its motion and behaviour through space and time, and the related entities of energy and force. Physics is one of the most fundamental scientific disciplines, and its main goal is to understand how the universe behaves.
Classification
Archaeologists got various proofs of
use of physics from remainings of ancients Egyptian and Indus-valley
civilizations. The subject came into notice from the 17th century.
In the year 1687 Sir Isaac
Newton published a comprehensive theory of gravity, which boosted the discoveries of the
fundamental laws of nature and Sir Newton came to be known as ‘The
Father Of Physics’. The world of Physics is spread in a huge base, it is
basically divided into 3 followings categories:-
1. Classical Physics
2. Quantum Physics
3. Relativity
Here, I produce a basic “Map of
Physics”-
In order to start studying physics we should know the above map very well.
Let’s Start
Classical Physics
What is Classical Physics? It is nothing but the old explanation of every modern theory. The era of Classical Physics started with the discovery of gravity by Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1726/27) in the year 1687. This is also known as Classical Mechanics. Basically, this field explains every concept we experience on earth. This field can further be classified into 4 parts as follows:-
1. Newtonian Mechanics- This is the
original theory of motion (kinematics) and force (dynamics)
2. Analytical Mechanics- This is
simply the reformulation of Newtonian Mechanics with an emphasis on
system energy rather than force.
3. Thermodynamics- Many physicists
consider this as a part of Analytical Mechanics as it is used to derive the
properties of thermodynamics. This branch deals with heat, work, and temperature, and their
relation to energy, radiation, and
properties of matter.
4.
Electromagnetism- This branch involves the study of
the electromagnetic force, a type of physical interaction that
occurs between electrically charged particles.
Quantum Physics
Quantum Physics generally involves explanation regarding quantum theory. It explains aspects of nature, on a microscopic scale, for which the Classical Physics is insufficient. Nowadays most of the discoveries and researches are based on this field. This field came in the show when German physicist and mathematician Otto Lummer (1860-1925) and Alfred Pringsheim (1850-1941) failed to explain the whole blackbody radiation spectrum. In 1900, the German physicist Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck (1858–1947) explained the ultraviolet catastrophe/the blackbody radiation spectrum by proposing that the energy of electromagnetic waves is quantized rather than continuous. Hence the birth of a new field ‘Quantum Physics’. It introduced various concepts including atomic theory, quantum field theory, nuclear physics, particle physics, etc.
Relativity
Relativity is the least explored and the most interesting (according to me) branch of Physics. This is a theory by the great physicist Sir Albert Einstein (1879-1955) that involves the study of gravity but not in terms of force. This branch is composed of 2 theories as follows:-
1. The
Special Theory of Relativity- This is the explanation of Space-time and applies
to all physical phenomenon in the absence of gravity.
2. The
General Theory of Relativity- This explains
the law of gravitation (but not as a force) and its relation to other forces of
nature.
This branch of Physics applies to the cosmological and astrophysical realm, including astronomy.
The theory
transformed theoretical physics and astronomy during the 20th century,
superseding a 200-year-old theory of mechanics created
primarily by Isaac
Newton. It introduced concepts
including spacetime as a unified entity of space and time, relativity of simultaneity, kinematic and gravitational time dilation,
and length contraction.
Well, these are the branches
we are dealing in the present time. Now comes something I call ‘the chasm of
ignorance’. This includes the futuristic discoveries in the field of Relativity and
Quantum Physics like quantum gravity, dark energy, dark matter and many more.
There is another idea in the air nowadays, various questions like ‘Why
everything?’, ‘How come everything?’, ‘What is the Nature of Everything?’, etc,
gave birth to the new idea ‘The Philosophy of Science’.
Here are some tips and tricks by which students can
improve their knowledge in the subject and will help them to study Physics with
ease.
Physics is a subject that often gives students a
headache as it includes complex mathematical problems. However, it is
a fascinating natural science that has contributed greatly to helping
us understand the world around us and to develop technologically. We discuss

How to Study Physics: 5 Techniques to
Improve your Memory
1. Master the Basics:
Physics is based on a number of central
theories as mentioned above. It is therefore very likely that the problems
you will have to solve in the exam will be based on these core concepts or a
variation of these. Consequently, instead of trying to memorize complex
problems, it is advisable to assimilate the basic concepts and theories which
will help you understand the underlying principles and the connection between
different subjects.
2. Strengthen Your Maths Skills:
As already
mentioned, if you are studying Physics then you will see that it incorporates
many mathematical elements. This means that you would easily master this
subject if you were adept at tackling multiple formulas and problems.
3. Simplify:
Try to simplify the
situation as much as possible. The Physics problem you are reading may seem
difficult to solve at first but take another look and begin to analyse it and
you will realize that is easier than you first thought. Try to relate the given
problem with for daily life activities, because physics explains our daily life
activities in a scientific manner.
4.
Use Diagrams:
A great way to
implement the point above is through diagrams or graphics. Drawings can be
essential when in order to understand and study physics. You can see I have
also explained the branches of physics with a ‘Map of Physics’ and it was so
simple.
5. Use Self-made Notes to Study:
Takedown note of
new words, units of measure, general principles and other concepts that arise.
This will help you follow the thread of theory and strengthen the new information which will have positive consequences when faced with the problem
solving.
These five techniques
are helping many Physics students at all levels, especially when used together.
However, each student has their own way to learn and assimilate knowledge, so I
recommend you try different techniques to discover which one best suits you.
